Representatives from Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire have been praised by educational coordinators at The Long Eaton School in Derbyshire for their involvement in an innovative cookery project known as the ‘Pass It On’ project.
Inspired by the efforts of Jamie Oliver to bring healthy eating into communities and schools, the project now in its fourth year, delivers an opportunity for participants to sample new foods, cook delicious meals and develop the confidence to grow in the kitchen.
Working to transform the lives of many, the course has encouraged youngsters to pursue a career in the food industries, taught young mums how to cook healthy meals for their children and has given 6th form students about to go to university, the confidence to cook for themselves.
Barbara James, Eco School Coordinator for The Long Eaton School, has been working with the project from the very beginning, she said: “The weekly ‘Pass It On’ project is fantastic. There is no restriction on age and we have welcomed families who would like to learn how to cook together, young mums and men who would like to learn a new skill. The course provides a new outlook on cookery, focuses on healthy eating and working to budgets, and gives those who attend, some handy hints and tips on saving money and reducing waste.”
Jo Perkins, the Groundwork project leader, said: “This project allows people with different levels of ability in cooking to come and try out new recipes and ingredients in a safe and encouraging environment. Learning how to grow your own veg, cooking and healthy eating are essential skills for all ages”.
Cooking and Food growing and other courses such as 'Forest Skills' and construction courses that we run for young people are an inspirational way of learning social skills and develop in confidence through hands on learning. For more information on our courses click here.
