On the 4th November 2011, 46 employees of WSP Environment & Energy from as far afield as Birmingham and Leeds descended en masse on the nature reserve at Chellaston in Derby known as Chellaston Brickworks, working alongside Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire and the Friends of Chellaston Brickworks to improve the area for the local community and for wildlife.

The volunteers achieved a range of highly important tasks throughout the day, from planting trees to excavating a new pond, strimming a meadow and removing old posts and barbed wire fencing.

Sam Maw, Education Manager at Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire said: “Volunteers are incredibly important to our work on green open spaces and local nature reserves throughout Derbyshire and Derby City. The WSP Environment & Energy volunteers, the Friends of Chellaston Brickworks and volunteers that have joined us from BTCV over the past few weeks have completed work to the value of over £3,500.

The new ponds will help to support a growing amphibian population, the meadow strimming and raking will encourage the establishment of more orchids and the tree thinning will lead to an increase in the number and variety of butterflies on the site. Every single volunteer hour helps to increase the biodiversity of Derby and supports the work of WildDerby.”

The volunteers were working on Chellaston Brickworks Nature Reserve with Sam Maw from Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire in partnership with the Friends of Chellaston Brickworks. The work is funded by WildDerby and the Sita Ponds project.
