Through our work we improve people’s health both directly and indirectly. Much of our work helps to improve lives in disadvantaged communities and affects the wider health agenda.
We’ve found that encouraging people to value, use and improve open spaces is one of the most effective ways of kick-starting a revival in the fortunes of damaged communities and also helping people to adopt healthier lifestyles.
The Food Initiatives Group (FIG) is a food partnership project working with schools and community groups to promote healthy eating. Projects include helping people to grow organic fruit and vegetables on local allotments, helping people to access affordable healthy food and teaching skills such as gardening or cooking.
FIG works in partnership with the Health sector and Local Authorities and has produced ‘Food for Thought’ - a countywide strategy for improving Greater Nottinghamshire’s’ food, health and environment.
One of our major successes is the development of a network of allotments across the city and help and assist schools and communities to grow their own vegetables, cook them and enjoy eating their produce. The project offers practical support, educational awarenes and chances of volunteering.
Groundwork Greater Nottingham is a very valuable organisation that has helped us to achieve our objectives and to develop our health-and-environment works
