The recent Greener Leicester Awards held at DeMontfort University, proved a roaring success for Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire as it picked up the overall winner trophy and three category awards at the prestigious ceremony.
In the presence of Deputy City Mayor and Cabinet Environment Lead, Councillor Rory Palmer, Groundwork took the Greener Leicester Award for 2011 for its work in city schools to educate pupils and staff about energy reduction and environmental issues generally. Receiving the award for Groundwork’s EMAS in Schools Programme, Rebecca James said “we are so proud to have won the Greener Leicester Award, but our success is really about the positive environmental impact young people in schools can make – it goes to prove young people really can make a difference.”
Groundwork also won in the Community Category for its innovative Bikes 4 All scheme, which last year helped refurbish and return to use, 600 cycles sent to landfill. It also picked up first place in the Young Person category, which was won by Marketing and Volunteer Officer, Kartar Singh Bring.
Established in 2004, the Greener Leicester Awards are a showcase of the environmental work being carried out in the city by businesses, educational establishments and community organisations. The wide range of projects submitted to the awards in 2011 demonstrates Leicester’s commitment to tackling environmental issues including CO2 reduction, climate change and sustainable living.
