Training for the jobless young

Leicestershire-based charity, Groundwork is offering young people the opportunity to gain new skills and improve their chance of getting a job.

Groundwork is looking for young people aged between 16 and 18 who aren’t in work, or attending education or training.

Individuals will be able to learn skills in bike maintenance, retail and construction as well as valuable customer service, money handling and other skills relevant to world of work.

The traditional view of school is turned on its head by Groundwork, as learners are taken not into a classroom – into workshops, retail outlets and construction sites – for their lessons. It’s more hands-on than hands up.

The charity’s programme has been running for over a year, but has seen a limited number of young people access the free learning.

The charity is now urging Leicestershire’s young people to take the opportunity to increase their skills in an informal environment and combat the increasing unemployment figures for young people.

Rachel Fletcher, Education & Training Manager, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for young people across Leicestershire. This hands dirty way of learning is a tremendous way to boost your skills which could lead to a job or further qualifications."

“We’re looking for young people who may have felt that the traditional school environment isn’t for them.”
