EMAS or ‘Eco-Management and Audit Scheme’ is a recognised and accredited European scheme designed to improve an organisations environmental performance. Delivered by Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire within Leicester City schools and in partnership with Leicester City Council, the scheme takes an innovative approach to environmental management in schools. It focuses on ways in which sustainable development can be embedded into whole school management practices and provides practical guidance to help schools operate in a more sustainable way.  By involving the whole school and combining holistic change with more traditional environmental management systems,  we aim to inspire positive behavioural change for a sustainable future.

By signing up to the EMAS in Schools Programme with Groundwork and Leicester City Council, your school will be showing a strong commitment to working towards becoming a sustainable school and reducing its impact on the environment. The project can be tailored to your needs through a dedicated Groundwork EMAS Officer who will work with you to provide a bespoke educational package. This will include an environmental audit and action plan, together with options for assemblies, class and club sessions, fundraising support and advice on environmental issues if desired. With an ever increasing focus on carbon reduction comitments, it can also include aspects such as the monitoring of schools energy and water use, often leading to significant financial savings.
