History

Parkfield buildingGroundwork Leicester and Leicestershire became a Groundwork Trust in 2006 but has a long history of environmental and ecological work.

In the 1980s, we were involved in a survey of the City's natural habitats which led to Watermead Ecological Park being established as a living outdoor classroom, to help schools learn about nature in the City. This was called the City Wildlife Project (CWP).

In 1987, CWP broadened its work to focus on recycling and energy efficiency through a sister organisation called Leicester Ecology Trust (LET) which was managed by CWP. Kerbside recycling collections and the EcoHouse were two major projects by the LET.

Leicester became a pioneer of urban, environmental good practice, attracting interest from other cities and organisations.  This lead to the development of Leicester Environment City Trust (LECT) in 1990/1 - an independent charity to promote the Environment City message.

In 1993 LECT and LET merged to form an independent organisation called Environ which delivered a range of groundbreaking environmental projects. Environ joined the Groundwork UK network in 2006 which enabled it to extend its remit to social and economic change, actively engaging youth and communities in its work.
