Groundwork East Midlands and Climate Skills Fund - Communities
Groundwork East Midlands has been awarded funding from the Department of Communities and Local Government through the East Midlands Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (EM IEP) to invest in four innovative projects across the East Midlands that will further strengthen links between local authorities, organisations and communities in the fight against climate change – to bring about positive action and behavioural change.
If we are to survive and prosper through a changing climate we must adapt our environment and the way in which we live, work and play. In the East Midlands we are fortunate to have communities and organisations that, individually and collectively seek to achieve low carbon targets, address climate change and explore how we can all save and adapt. It is hoped that this cash injection, distributed through Groundwork East Midlands, will not only boost activity but also mobilise greater interaction between these parties and attract new interest and further investment in our communities to help them find innovative and reliable ways in which we can all address the challenges climate change pose.
Groundwork, who were awarded the contract to scope and manage the projects, have a strong track record in working with communities and individuals to help them save and adapt for climate change. Projects have included the Green Doctor, where householders benefit from tailored advice and energy saving installations, Green Homes, the transformation of derelict social housing into eco-homes, and Green Grants to encourage businesses to install energy efficiency measures. Groundwork’s expertise teamed with the combined experience of the selected steering group provides the programme with a solid foundation from which to grow.
Organisations and communities of all shapes and sizes have differing but equally vital roles to play in building communities that are resilient and climate friendly. By engaging with this programme there is an opportunity to identify what we as individuals and organisations have to offer and also how we can further develop from the knowledge, experience and support of others.
Those active in the arena can make a valuable contribution at this early stage by sharing with us information on the projects and programmes they have experience of and any associated resources. This will help to avoid duplication and maximise our resource efficiency – leading by example to the communities which we seek to mobilise and support to tackle climate change.
As the programme progresses we aim for the continuation and expansion of this collaborative approach so that it extends to the communities with which we work. To achieve this platforms will be developed to enable the varied groups and individuals involved in the projects to share information, resources and provide and access support. Best practise models will be developed to help collectively equip ourselves, as an ever-evolving network, for the continuation and future development of community focused activity to mitigate and adapt against climate change.
