Climate Skills Fund - Communities

Wind turbineThe contract for the Communities element has been awarded to Groundwork East Midlands and it is our role to scope up, deliver manage and evaluate the three projects with support of a selected steering group. The delivery of the projects will be through a mixture of anonymous tenders and direct liaison with organisations that have been short-listed in preliminary work undertaken by CEM, EMIEP, GOEM and partners.

There are 3 projects within the Communities strand.  They are:

1.   Energy & Carbon - Helping Save, Adapt and Renew

Developing structured support for local communities to enable them to make informed decisions and meaningful input into consultations on the renewable energy /low carbon/adaptation agendas.

Update: This web-based resource, is now available at http://www.planningforclimatechange.org.uk/, it provides a comprehensive guide for communities who want to respond to a low carbon planning application or develop a project of their own.  It is a continually updated single point resource that signposts key organisations, documents and legislation as well as providing links to sources of funding and updates on best practice. See news article here.

In addition, the Centre for Sustainable Energy has joined forces with Marches Energy Agency to deliver 4 participatory events designed to help local communities influence planning decisions on renewable and low carbon developments in their areas.  The events will be held during October 2011 at venues across the East Midlands.  Further details can be obtained from Louisa Haines, CSE, on 0117 934 1429.

2.   Growing Climate Friendly Communities

This project has two strands:

  • A project funding pot encouraging community engagement in climate change activity
  • Providing customised support and a network for communities who receive funding, engaging with individuals and      groups  to share best practice, aims and challenges which their projects bring as well as enhancing skills and knowledge.

Update: The eight communities awarded a grant towards their project will be given the opportunity to network and share experiences and good practice at two interactive events held in the summer and winter of 2011.  For further details contact diane.whitehead@groundwork.org.uk

3.   Learning to Save and Conserve In Any Location

Upskilling individuals or organisations to enable hard to heat / remote communities to make informed decisions on low carbon and quality of life issues.

Update: The six Groundwork Trusts in the East Midlands jointly submitted a successful bid to recruit and train Community Champions and Energy Advisors in selected hard to heat or off-gas communities.  Awareness raising events will be held in each community to explore opportunities to reduce energy consumption by fuel poor households.  These activities will complement and support those being undertaken as part of the Calor Future of Rural Energy project.
